Dear Longfellow Families,
It is with great excitement and gratitude that I introduce myself as the new principal of Longfellow Elementary School. My name is Kenia Hernandez Lugo (I go by Ms. Kenia), and I am truly honored to join this amazing school community. From the moment I learned about Longfellow, it was clear that this is a place where students are supported, valued, and encouraged to be their very best.
This year’s theme is: Thinking Differently: Longfellow Leaders Take Initiative.
Thinking differently means being creative, flexible, and open to new ideas. Taking Initiative means stepping up to help, lead, and make a difference without being asked. Together, they inspire us to solve problems, take ownership, and lead with courage, creativity, and action.
A little about me: I’m a proud UCLA Bruin with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology and a master’s in Educational Administration. I’ve taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 8th grade, and have served as an Assistant Principal and Interim Principal in TK–8 and TK–5 settings. Throughout my journey, my focus has always been on equity, high expectations, and creating learning spaces filled with joy, purpose, and belonging.
Outside of school, I love spending time with my family and friends, especially when traveling. I’m a proud tía to four nephews and one niece: the oldest graduated from college this summer, and the youngest is just three months old. I’m also a proud dog mom to two sweet pups, Piggly and Bucket, who keep life fun and full of energy. In my downtime, I enjoy hiking, swimming, going for walks, and getting lost in a good book.
I look forward to working together as partners in your child’s education. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. I can’t wait to meet you and your children and to begin a year filled with learning, leading, and creating memories!
With appreciation,
Kenia Hernandez Lugo
