I hope you and your families are well and safe.  I wanted to take this opportunity to share some important information regarding the upcoming school year.   Our school is committed to continue to provide your child with a rigorous and engaging academic experience.  Our teachers have been busy participating in professional development this summer, and they will continue to teach the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Students with Wildly Important Goals (WIGs).  Our goal is to support our LEADERS so that they can continue to develop their genius!    Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 17, 2022. 

PREPARING FOR NEW TK/KINDERGARTEN AND  SDC STUDENTS - TK/Kindergarten Orientation and SDC Orientation will be on August 10 at 5p.m.  During this meeting, the teachers will provide helpful information for your child to start school.  You will also be provided an opportunity to ask questions. 

EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION, LUNCH APPLICATIONS, AND PERMISSION FORMS- Communication is key. Our school MUST always have updated information regarding your address and valid phone numbers. On the first day of school we will be sending home the emergency information cards so that you can complete and return to us the next day.  You will also receive other forms that need to be completed for library books and for the use of the iPads. Lunch applications can be completed online at schoolcafe.com/whittier or in the school office.  Please complete the lunch application even if you feel you don’t qualify. The data that is collected benefits our school and it also triggers the EBT cards for our families who qualify. You need only to complete one lunch application per family. Please include all students and household members in the same application. If you have any questions, please contact the Food Service Office at (562) 789 3082. 

Uniforms

Several years ago, the Whittier City School District Board of Education adopted a uniform policy district-wide. Students at Longfellow Elementary are to wear navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, skirts or jumpers and a polo shirt or a solid t-shirt in one of the following colors:  white, red, light blue or navy blue. Students are encouraged to show school spirit by wearing a college/school spirit t-shirt EVERY Tuesday.  Students should also have suitable shoes for physical activities. No sandals are permitted at school. A student whose attire disrupts the learning environment will be sent to the school office. You can purchase uniforms at any department store, JC Penny, Target, Kohls, etc. Every Tuesday is “I’m going to College Day”. On Tuesdays, students can wear a university t-shirt or jersey and jeans with no holes or fraying. Every Friday is Spirit Day. On Fridays, students can wear a Longfellow T-shirt or sweater and jeans with no holes or fraying.

iPADS- We hope that our students were able to practice their reading and math over the summer by using the learning apps on the borrowed iPads. During the month of August, iPads will be issued to our incoming TK and Kinder students.  Parents will be provided a form to review, sign and return to school prior to the distribution of the iPads. 

CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS- You will be notified via Parent Square the week of August 15 and posted in front of the office. 

PARENTSQUARE

Parent Square is an electronic communication tool used by our school and district. Your email is used to register you into the system. NEW FAMILIES will receive an email or text to invite you to register or you can also download the app to your Smartphone.  If you do not receive an invitation to Parent Square and are having difficulty accessing your account, please call our school office at (562) 789-3180 to speak with the school secretary, Nikkie Robles or clerk, Norma Vargas.  Be sure to include your full name, your child’s full name, your email address, as well as your cell phone number. 

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE - Applications are available in the office for both the Jumpstart Program (before school) and Reach for the Stars (after school).  Please come to the office to fill out an application.  Please note these programs fill up quickly. 

SCHOOL HOURS - School begins at 8 am for all grade levels.  Dismissal for TK - 3rd grade is at 2:15 p.m. and 4th-5th grade end school at 2:25p.m. Tuesday will once again be our minimum day when students are dismissed early. Dismissal for TK - 3rd grade is at 12:25 p.m. and 4th-5th grade end school at 12:35p.m.

Lastly, I am truly honored to continue to serve as your school principal and I look forward to another exciting year at Longfellow Elementary.  Our goal is to ensure that your child will continue to make academic growth and feel emotionally supported during this time.  It is important that we continue to nurture our Longfellow community and this will be accomplished through teamwork and open communication.  

As we prepare to return to school, I ask that we all work together to ensure the safety of our students.  It will be important that we follow the guidelines and safety measures at home and school to keep everyone safe.

Espero que ustedes y sus familias estén bien y seguros. Quería aprovechar esta oportunidad para compartir información importante sobre el próximo año escolar. Nuestra escuela se compromete a continuar brindando a su hijo una experiencia académica rigurosa y atractiva. Nuestros maestros han estado ocupados participando en el desarrollo profesional este verano y continuarán enseñando los 7 Hábitos de los Estudiantes Altamente Efectivos con Metas Muy Importantes (WIG). ¡Nuestro objetivo es apoyar a nuestros LÍDERES para que puedan continuar desarrollando su genio! PREPARACIÓN PARA ESTUDIANTES NUEVOS DE TK/KINDERGARTEN Y SDC 

La orientación de TK/Kindergarten y SDC será el 10 de agosto a las 5 p.m. Durante esta reunión, los maestros brindarán información útil para que su hijo comience la escuela. También tendrá la oportunidad de hacer preguntas.

INFORMACIÓN DE CONTACTO DE EMERGENCIA, SOLICITUDES DE ALMUERZO Y FORMULARIOS DE PERMISO 

La comunicación es clave. Nuestra escuela DEBE tener siempre información actualizada sobre su dirección y números de teléfono válidos. El primer día de clases enviaremos a casa las tarjetas de información de emergencia para que pueda completarlas y devolverlas al día siguiente. También recibirá otros formularios que deben completarse para los libros de la biblioteca y para el uso de los iPads. Las solicitudes de almuerzo se pueden completar en línea en schoolcafe.com/whittier o en la oficina de la escuela. Complete la solicitud de almuerzo incluso si cree que no califica. Los datos que se recopilan benefician a nuestra escuela y también activan las tarjetas EBT para nuestras familias que califican. Solo necesita completar una solicitud de almuerzo por familia. UNIFORMES

Hace varios años, la Junta de Educación del Distrito Escolar de la Ciudad de Whittier adoptó una política uniforme en todo el distrito. Los estudiantes de la escuela primaria Longfellow deben usar pantalones, pantalones cortos, faldas o suéteres azul marino o caqui y una camisa polo o una camiseta sólida en uno de los siguientes colores: blanco, rojo, azul claro o azul marino. Se alienta a los estudiantes a mostrar el espíritu escolar usando una camiseta de espíritu universitario/escolar TODOS los martes. iPADS

Esperamos que nuestros estudiantes hayan podido practicar su lectura y matemáticas durante el verano usando las aplicaciones de aprendizaje en los iPad prestados. Durante el mes de agosto, se entregarán iPads a nuestros estudiantes de TK y Kinder entrantes. Los padres recibirán un formulario para revisar, firmar y devolver a la escuela antes de la distribución de los iPads.

PARENTSQUARE

Parent Square es una herramienta de comunicación electrónica utilizada por nuestra escuela y distrito. Su correo electrónico se utiliza para registrarlo en el sistema. NUEVAS FAMILIAS recibirá un correo electrónico o mensaje de texto para invitarlo a registrarse o también puede descargar la aplicación a su teléfono inteligente. Si no recibe una invitación a Parent Square y tiene dificultades para acceder a su cuenta, llame a la oficina de nuestra escuela al (562) 789-3180 para hablar con la secretaría de la escuela, Nikkie Robles o la secretaria, Norma Vargas. Asegúrese de incluir su nombre completo, el nombre completo de su hijo, su dirección de correo electrónico y su número de teléfono celular.

CUIDADO ANTES Y DESPUÉS DE LA ESCUELA
